It wasn’t really that crazy, but my normal yoga instructor had a sub today. I’ve taken his class a few times in the past when he’s subbed for other teachers, but I never seek him out.
He’s definitely a talented yogi, and very impressive to watch. He has amazing muscle control and flexibility. He can float and handstand all over the place, and pretzel his knee up behind his neck. And he does so at every opportunity!
His class is not a conventional yoga class. We didn’t do a single sun salutation, no warriors, not a even a single chaturanga. We did do all sorts of other stuff that isn’t often done in classes. I think he may make some of it up.
I always kinda groan when I see him as the sub, but in reality, his class is different and pretty fun. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, and he encourages us to try new things, like teaching us how to begin to float from forward fold to plank. He constantly challenges us to think about the next step in a pose. If you can do a side plank, why not lift up your top leg? If you can do a balancing half moon, now lift up your hand! But he does so all in the context of playful experimentation and growing your practice. He encourages us that it’s a practice and a journey. He preaches and raves in a motivational, passionate way throughout the class, there isn’t a lot of silence. I think he might be the type of teacher that grows on you. He might be growing on me.
